…Mary’s summary of Nicaragua 2017 VBS
I began this trip again just praying for what GOD would have me do. HE gave me one word that was delivered by a friend. YIELD. That was a hard word for me as I was the leader of this trip, and yet HE asked me to YIELD.

I looked for confirmation from HIM through His word and I was given first Peter to read. I did read and re read it. It was not until Chapter 5 did I truly grasp how GOD wanted to work through me.

“Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

As I prayed for submission and yielding to GOD first. He allowed me to yield to others. GOD also gave me another verse from 2 Corinthians

How I saw the Hand of GOD work through his vessels, was amazing, and beautiful. Another word from the LORD was the thread of our trip and that was Proverbs 3 trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.

Trusting and leaning started Monday morning, when Steffen entered my room early and said, Holten has been throwing up all night and I am worried about him. VBS was Monday, and our captain was down. Holten was down and it took energy and strength from both Reina and I to watch and care for him through the next 2 days. We all prayed for a miracle, and it came in four people. Our translators showed up and they were a huge blessing beyond what I expected, but exactly what we needed.

They were truly a gift from the LORD. GOD got the glory through Holten’s illness, because we saw how amazing GOD was to help us, through these translators. They stayed with us and became for me a huge part of the team. One of our translators shared with me, that most teams he translates for don’t always treat him as a team member, but just a translator. This is hurtfulto most translators, as they feel GOD has given them a gift to share, not just a job. This translator told me that his prayer for teams is that they would come and open their heart and mind to what Nicaraguans can give the team, instead of the expectation of what teams members come to give. He felt a little bit of that we some members, however, for the most part, he thanked us personally for being so gracious to him, as we had no choice but to allow him to take over our VBS while Holten was down for 2 days. GOD was glorified through Holtens illness, to allow our translators to become part of our team and to give us this lesson in humility towards others.

I saw GOD glorified in many ways. The one most outstanding was the work He was doing in the lives of Nicaraguans. From our translators, to Reina and her family with little Khloe, in the life of Khloes real mom, and to the people we met at La Roca, and in the village. GOD gave us the people of La Rosa church. I saw that in the spontaniety of meeting with the women of the church. We have started a community of fellowship, that I am praying would continue to grow. Even the teenage girls want to join with us and it was beautiful to see GODs handiwork in our fellowship.

I was blessed to work along side of Reina as she tended the health needs of the village. At one point she looked at me and said, “Mary, you know what to do, do it!”

She gave me the ok to start seeing patients like I used to, and I immediately starting working. What a privilege to share in this work with her. We saw about 15 patients, which included whole families. Most of their problems were related to parasites, and dental cavities. Our translator, Aaron’s wife is a dentist, and she is going to go out with Reina to help and teach dental hygiene.

I want to end with this, I met Dona Sofia in the village. She is about 70 or 80 something, she does not celebrate her birthday. She has uncontrolled diabetes, poor vision, amputated left leg, and now neuropathy in her right leg. As I met her, she shared her love and strength for GOD her Savior and Father her whole life and in that moment. You see her house, she lives with her husband who works in the fields. She cooks, and cleans, and washes clothes for people in the village for a living. At that moment of our visit, she had no food, and Reina and I were able to give her money to buy rice and beans. As healthcare workers, she showed us her sores on her legs. I was touched as Reina asked me if I had anything to put on these wounds. I kept thinking what we could use. And then GOD reminded me of our dear Peggy, who this women reminded me of. She, at the last minute gave me a bag of medicine, I remember glancing at it and packed in my bag. Well, guess what, GOD be praised, this medicine is exactly what this woman needed to heal her ulcers on her leg. What a privilege to have been part of GODs work in such a small way, yet huge for this woman of the village. Dona Sofia told me that GOD is with her always. I asked her if she read any books, and she said only one. Every night her and her husband read the bible together before they fall asleep. GOD taught me to yield to Him in ways, I am sorting through and extremely thankful again for this opportunity to stand and see the glory of GOD manifest.
